Researchers of the PNNL Radiochemical Engineering Team support the Nation's most challenging environmental, energy, and security processes. As a category II nuclear facility, aspects of these processes are often experimentally investigated in the PNNL Radiochemical Processing Laboratory's shielded facilities and glove box capability. Our primary expertise lies in development, scale-up and deployment of first-of-a-kind processes to solve environmental problems, including extensive experience with high-level and low-level mixed tank wastes and their simulants. Our clients use our capabilities in radiochemical process engineering to design, install, and test radiochemical process systems. These systems include leaching, solvent extraction, ion exchange, vitrification, fuel dissolution, decontamination, evaporation, grouting, solid waste packaging and shipment, high-level liquid waste shipping, receiving, and transportation. Our clients also use our capabilities to process flowsheets and develop chemical engineering processes for toxic and highly radioactive systems.

Nuclear Design and Fabrication

We also have expertise in nuclear systems design and demonstration including extensive experience with plutonium stabilization and tritium production. Our clients use our capabilities in nuclear design and fabrication to:

  • Design, fabricate and test nuclear systems to support the stabilization of plutonium both on the Hanford site and Savannah River site.
  • Design, fabricate, test and operate tritium extraction systems to support facility design for a large scale Tritium Extraction Facility.
